One of the most talked-about records is the highest score in ODI history.

Over the years, several players have come close to breaking others’ records, but the highest individual score in a single ODI innings remains unmatched. In this article, we will examine the top 10 players with the highest ODI scores by an individual.

Highest Score in ODI by a Player

The highest individual score in ODI cricket is 264 runs, achieved by Rohit Sharma against Sri Lanka in 2014. He smashed the highest ODI score in 173 deliveries with 33 fours (maximum in ODI) and 9 sixes. Rohit Sharma is also the only player who has scored 3 double centuries in one-day international.

Rohit Sharma’s first double century came against Australia in 2013 in Bangalore, where he smashed 209 runs off 158 balls. The second double century (264 off 173) he scored against Sri Lanka in 2014 which is the highest score in ODI history. His last double century came in Mohali against Sri Lanka. He scored 208 runs off 153 balls, remaining not out in the match.

Top 10 Highest Score in ODI by a Batsman

Indian player Rohit Sharma tops the list of the highest score in ODI by hitting 264 runs off 173 balls. He is followed by Martin Guptil (237* off 163), Virendra Sehwag (219 off 149), Chris Gayle (215 off 147), and Fakhar Zaman (210* off 156). It should be noted that Rohit Sharma appeared three times in the top 10 list.

MJ Guptill – 237 (2015)*

Martin Guptill scored one-day highest score for NZ with an unbeaten 237 runs against the West Indies in March 2015 during the World Cup. Playing in Wellington, he faced 163 balls and hit 24 fours and 11 sixes. This helped New Zealand post a huge total and win the quarterfinal, reaching the semifinals of the tournament.

Virender Sehwag – 219 (2011)

Virender Sehwag scored 219 runs against the West Indies in December 2011 in Indore. He became the second player to hit a double century and the highest score in ODI cricket. He faced 149 balls and struck 25 fours and seven sixes. His aggressive batting helped India reach 418 and win the match by a large margin. It was the highest individual ODI score at the time.

Chris Gayle – 215 (2015)

Chris Gayle became the first player to score a double century in a World Cup match. He hit 215 runs off 147 balls against Zimbabwe in February 2015. His innings included 16 sixes and took West Indies to 372. The team won the match comfortably using the DLS method.

Fakhar Zaman – 210 (2018)*

Fakhar Zaman scored an unbeaten 210 against Zimbabwe in July 2018 in Bulawayo and became the highest scorer in ODI. He faced 156 balls and hit 24 fours and five sixes. This was the first double century by a Pakistani player in ODIs. His knock helped Pakistan post 399 and win the match by a huge margin.

Pathum Nissanka – 210 (2024)*

Pathum Nissanka scored an unbeaten 210 runs against Afghanistan in February 2024 at Pallekele. He faced 139 balls and became the first Sri Lankan to score a double century in ODIs. His innings helped Sri Lanka reach a big total and win the match by 42 runs.

Ishan Kishan – 210 (2022)

Ishan Kishan scored 210 runs off 131 balls against Bangladesh in December 2022 at Chattogram. It was the fastest double century in ODI history. He hit 24 fours and 10 sixes. His quick scoring helped India post over 400 runs and win the match by 227 runs.

Shubman Gill – 208 (2023)

Shubman Gill scored 208 runs against New Zealand in January 2023 at Hyderabad and became the youngest player to cross the 200 mark. He faced 149 balls and hit 19 fours and nine sixes to hit one of the quickest highest ODI scores. His innings helped India reach 349 runs. The team won the match by 12 runs in a closely contested finish.

Glenn Maxwell – 201 (2023)*

Glenn Maxwell scored an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in November 2023 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the most inspiring inning of cricket history, Maxwell faced 128 balls and hit 21 fours and 10 sixes.

Despite struggling with cramps and back pain, he led Australia to a fabulous and unforeseen comeback win in the World Cup match.

Sachin Tendulkar – 200 (2010)*

Sachin Tendulkar became the first cricketer to score a double century in ODI history. He achieved this milestone against South Africa in February 2010 at Gwalior. The God of cricket remained unbeaten on 200 runs from 147 balls, hitting 25 fours and three sixes. His innings helped India post 401 and win the match by 153 runs.
